Over Four Hundreds of Painted Terrapin Hatchlings Ready to be Released into the Wild
Over four hundred of three to five months old Painted Terrapin (Batagur borneoensis) hatchlings are ready to be released into the habitat which are estuaries and rivers in the District of Aceh Tamiang.
Those are the result of nest patrol – securing the eggs on the beach, incubation in artificial hatchery – activity. During nesting season, from November 2022 to March 2023, the villagers (fisher) handed over the eggs to our team at Painted Terrapin Information Center (PTIC).
All eggs were incubated at the artificial hatchery pool at PTIC. It needs three to four months for eggs to hatch. Now, all the hatchlings are temporarily being raised in the pool at PTIC.
Do you know that over four thousand hatchlings have been released into the wild by our program since 2012? We are still monitoring the impact of this release on the recovery of the wild population.
The SatuCita would like to thank to Synchronicity Earth and Houston Zoo, so we are able to achieve this result.
